Out and About in New Orleans

Here is a miscellany of my photos from in and around New Orleans. The blurry shot was a happy accident at Mardi Gras. The houses are random, found on an afternoon walk. I spotted the ships along the Mississippi during a visit to Crescent Park in 2015. The last two photos are from Woodland Plantation, a bed-and-breakfast about an hour's drive southeast of the city.

New Orleans Flora

I've traveled to New Orleans five times since my first visit in 2012. Here are some pics of the lovely flowers and remnants I've encountered on these trips. For more of my photos of New Orleans and its environs, please visit the New Orleans tab under Photos on the left.

Whitney Plantation

If you travel to New Orleans , please make time to visit the Whitney Plantation. The museum, an hour's drive west of the city, teaches about enslaved peoples and the history of slavery in southern Louisiana. The museum tour is a sobering experience, most appropriately so. I took these photos during my visit there in April, 2019. For more information, please visit: https://www.whitneyplantation.org/

Gallier House, New Orleans

The Gallier House provides a glimpse into the life of wealthy, white Creoles in New Orleans in the mid 19th century. The Creoles, descendants of French and Spanish colonists, sought to preserve their culture at a time when Anglo influence was on the rise.

Crescent Park, New Orleans

Crescent Park runs along the mighty Mississippi River in New Orleans. You enter the park by walking over a tall footbridge. The path through the park is lined with beautiful wildflowers, and it affords a great view of the city and of the boats and barges traveling along the river. (River photos to be shared in a separate post.) I took this batch of photos during a visit in October, 2015.

Mardi Gras 2014

In March of 2014 my daughter and I had the pleasure of spending Mardi Gras in New Orleans. We are lucky to have a dear friend who lives there and has an insider's knowledge of this richly diverse city. Here are some of my favorite photos from that visit. If you have a chance to visit Mardi Gras once this pandemic has resolved, I recommend it!
